tbh get a feeling the author intended to write a better story but it fell apart after the hiatus. And continuing or ending a series is sometimes not a decision the author alone can make. The trashy publishers push the authors to milk popular stories and meet chapter quotas. So blaming the author alone while multiple factors are playing seems unfair.
