I think what they ment by performance based is whatever talent you have, be it academics or extracurricular activities. If you're an artist, athlete, musician, singer, and maybe smart in certain subjects, then you can maybe do with that. If it's academics, make a problem and solve it perfectly. You just have to do with what you got
