He’s not really annoying .Ashley has separation trauma from Koi which made his brain F-up that’s why he’s always obsessed with locking Koi up.
Koi always has the tendency to run away. Even when they were still just a teenager. So Ashley always locks the door of his car to prevent Koi from running away. Then when Koi left Ashley and didn’t come to their rendezvous place where they planned to meet to elope from Ashley’s father. It only got worse from there when they got back together. Ashley hated Koi so much because of that but since his love for Koi outweighs it than his hatred he choice to hurt himself. That’s the reason why his brain was damaged and that damaged costs him alot. His emotions, his control of his pheromones. Koi can’t even mark Ashley because of that because that also destroyed the part of his brain that allows an omega to mark an alpha.
Don’t blame Ashley too much. It is still better to read all the If You Can series to understand how his love for his children works.

This is long and a spoiler of Ashley and Koi’s story
They started Dating in Grade school but Ashley’s father didn’t approve of Koi because Koi was a Beta or so they thought. Anyways, Ashley’s father separated them to the point the two decided to elope but Koi never showed up. Ashley waited for Koi at the train station but he only received a call from Koi telling him he won’t be coming because his father (Koi’s father) was terminally ill and his days were numbered. Just for context, Koi is a battered child, his father constantly hits him and yet he chose his father over Ashley the only person who showed him genuine love. Ashley got hurt over it and his father dragged him to the East Coast. Months passed and Ashley came back to the Wedt Coast. Koi went to see him and Ashley asked him he stood him up. Koi gave the same reason and Ashley was like “Come with me, I’ll take care of you.” Koi didn’t accept the offer and told Ashley he has everything while his father has nothing. That broke Ashley’s heart because of all people it was Koi who knew the truth that Ashley is an empty shell. That it might appear he has everything but he literally has nothing. Not his parents love, nor power to go against his own father. For him he only has Koi who truly belongs to him and yet Koi left and chose his own abusive father over him. So they broke up.
10 years passed and Koi after saving up money went to the East Coast to chase after Ashley. He still loves Ashley and wanted to have him back. But Koi didn’t know that in that 10 years Ashley literally was destroying himself to the point it might costs his life. That’s how he got his brain damaged. That’s the reason why Ashley couldn’t feel any emotions and the reason why all his children can’t understand nor feel emotions. His children inherited his phenotype intact including the damaged in his part of the brain that understands emotions.
If you read the parents story you’ll understand why Ashley is the way he is in the present. Because Ashley is a cheerful guy even before his brain damaged. As the preview shown when he won the MVP in hockey. About the locking, he developed a severe PTSD when Koi stood him up and never showed up at the train station. He’d rather destroy himself than to live without Koi. In that 10 years of separation he never slept with any omega nor Beta. He endured his ruts alone. Even after they broke up he never betrayed Koi. Well he tried to agree with his father’s plan of arranged marriage and chose a partner the same as Koi but he ended the engagement because at the end it was still Koi. So for 10 years when they were apart he only loved Koi.
Forgive me, but this kinda made me hate Koi too LMAOOO. Okay, I’m kidding. They seem like two crazy people who are perfect for each other, but seriously, they both failed at raising their kids. And the problem is, they had way too many kids, like rabbits! but anyway thanks for all that spoiler (≧∀≦)
About having too many kids is because of the self harm Ashley inflicted upon himself. Like I said it resulted to an extensive brain damage. It also damaged the part of his brain that controls fertilization. Now they decided to stop with Greyson and Stacy but they didn’t know that Ashley already lost his ability to control fertilization and that resulted to Koi getting pregnant with Chase. Ashley tried to get Vasectomy but it wasn’t also an option because of his brain damage. Going through with the surgery might damage his brain even more so they can’t. Koi offered to use contraceptives. Well contraceptives in their time was not as effective as you can see the result, they ended up with 6 children.
Now did that answer why they have a lot of kids?

I haven’t read the novel, but I really hate Ashley. He seems like a walking red flag, a terrible father, and an annoying husband.
