I get the abandonment issues but i just dont think the plot needed the break up to portray it. They broke up, we get a relatively empty montage of his loneliness, a timeskip, his regret, and now they're face to face, all in one chapter. Felt very forced and unnecessary to me, and this happens in soo many romance conics "ahh I'm scared i wont be able to be with you forever/ you'll leave me I'm the worst so I'm gonna break your heart and ughh I'm the worstttt I'm sorry i take it back" no actual development or resolution to the issue at hand and i just cant like it

i think a lot of it will still depend on what happens from now on. but i understand that it feels unnecessary so far because the timeskip (and likely chapter number restrictions) makes it hard for us to actually see what yuji felt/realized during their time apart.

for sure this could have been something that could be solved with proper communication, but it’s worth remembering that they’re still in highschool, it’s a time for teens to be immature and emotional. plus the baggage that yuji’s had (hence his abandonment issues). it’s not the most rational way to go, but i feel it’s realistic/natural considering their circumstances.

I would never deny that it isnt a real thing that happens/doesnt make sense because it does! And yes teens are dumb and emotional and impulsive and this is definitely an example, but i just dont think it had to be done this way... i wish there was a more creative/unique way to show a character self sabotaging that isnt just "I'm scared you'll leave me so lets break up" and a time skip in a chapter. Not to say that it doesnt happen that way, but this is a story so relying solely on realism at the expense of engagement would be kinda wack (but ofc this is just my opinion at the end of the day). Like, i think we shouldve sat longer with his decision. But maybe itll be worth it after the next few chapters, ill give it that chance

And its not too late but i def want to see both sides of things too. Emotionally and mentally, being, In essence, dumped by someone you love wholeheartedly (as a lover and close, longtime friend) because they think youll inevitably leave them is soo hurtful and horrible. Like, of course his mentality is due to trauma, but that still affects others perception of themselves bc we are all human. And to pretend the other doesnt exist, then leave with the idea that you'll never see each other again is so tragic. I feel like we're missing out on a lot by not seeing that time period that actually makes this distance matter and mean as much as it does.

Plus, im just used to this kind of plot being used as the "third act break up", so seeing it here doesn't move me much because it was done in a very similar way as the other ones. Not to say it has to be a super subversive take on the trope, but something more personal(?) And creative wouldve been nice. Just my thoughts, no hate to anyone or the manga, i still thoroughly enjoy it and where it's (hopefully) going and will def read to the end ^_^

To my original comment, i also mentioned that they didnt have to break up to portray his abandonment issues because another things teenagers do irl is not break up even when they need to so it wouldve been interesting as well if they had this distance between them but both refused to actually break up but also couldnt quite communicate through it so simply. I think there are many ways to go about abandonment issues. Of course, just because i think they couldve done it one way doesnt mean its the only valid way, but I'm just trying to make sense of my comment in case it felt i was simply mad they broke up while not taking into account why it makes sense that they did

Yuji was insecure about the relationship from the very beginning; he mostly got into it because of the implicit pressure and the belief that things would work out since it was with Kirato. And yeah, teenagers do break up over all sorts of things—especially when it stems from a feeling that him just aren't cut out for a relationship (Yuji's case). Yuji explicitly told Kirato on the beach that no matter how much he loved him, that didn't guarantee they would always be together; and before Kirato could leave him upon realizing that Yuji was "a pain to deal with," he left first.

Besides, it would be more selfish to stay in the relationship while ignoring each other xd no sense. Yuji and Kirato are very direct when they argue. Yuji wanted to be alone > hence the breakup > Kirato gave him that freedom, even telling him it was okay to ignore him until graduation. He already knew Yuji would do that, so it was better to just say it all during that final conversation.

Yes it would've been selfish... but so is what he did. Pushing someone who loves him away because of his insecurities and trauma, therefore almost causing another cycle of "abandonent" had they stayed apart. I mean, i don't expect maturity from teen characters (especially ones with baggage) and i never argued that, my only gripe is that this trope is done so often and in the same way each time, and i wished we couldve seen the period after their break up span longer to make us, the reader, see the effect of their separation more than just having him look at him from afar. And Kirato's perspective wouldve been nice. But again, just because i think it couldve done differently doesnt mean it should have, its just my opinion
