i think its because maxi knew if riftan had known even the slightest bit beforehand he would never agree to it. for the plan to work, she needed him to be clueless. as horrible as it is, riftan also constantly kept maxi in the dark about the court and other stuff. had maxi didnt confront him, he would never told her too.
While I understand that he probably wouldn't have taken it well, I do wish she had at least clued Riftan in to what was going to happen... it's a horrible thing to just drop on someone right then and there with everyone else that your other half has chosen a path that will keep you separated for at least 4 years. A NORMAL person would likely be floored, but you know a dude like that will react so much worse...
