Genuinely asking: I'm not very familiar with Korean customs. Is it common that parents hit their adult children?

I would say it is very common in asia… as a south asian… we get hit on a very regular basis over the smallest things…

That's why belts, flip flops and rulers are memes here. Golf club, ashtray, vases etc for kinda hardcore discipline hahahahahha

It's disrespectful to hit back and even talk back to your parents. We are taught to always respect the elders, especially our parents. For them, it's for discipline. But yeah, it gets to a point. Respect should be given both ways.

I'm an educator myself working with children and I think if ever there comes a day in my life when I lose my mind and raise a hand against others doesn't matter an adult or a child I deserve to be hit back. Wdym respect someone who doesn't respect you????? Raise up against evil elder bitches!!!!

The thing is it’s embedded on us Asians that we must respect our elders, and that getting hit is something that would result if we did something wrong or didn’t meet the standards of our elders.
Even if those elders are at wrong most of the time you just gotta hold it in to not be told ungrateful or disrespectful

But sometimes or more often times, if something like that happens too much, it becomes downright abuse and I bet Taeyoung here did not grow up in a household where the hits were all about discipline.

You know deep down we just can’t… we are always taught that you are what you are today because of your parents… they are your gods… so we are so thoroughly brainwashed with that idea that no matter what they will do even talking back would put us in so much guilt that we would regret it afterwards even if we were right…
And also we would be considered toxic selfish bish if we hit the hands that raised us and feed us and did sacrifices for us…

Yea like they always told “I raised u & u did that !?” so we have nothing left to say back & just get it over with that. If we argue back, there’s no end cuz they be telling how I should behave blah blah blah for all day,all week so just get it over with beatings just faster to end that.

I don't wanna sound patronising, so Iwon't say anything. Just be happy and don't let anyone hit you. You all are beautiful humans deserving respect and dignity and if anyone thinks or says otherwise can f themselves. Doesn't matter who they are.

Corporal punishment is very much the norm here, as well at its been deeply ingrained in us how we must respect elders and be thankful to the life they gave us, that combination creates a cycle where hitting children is normalized and justified as "I got hit and I turned out fine" type of people. It has also been scientifically proven that corporal punishment does not work at all.

So talk to your kids when your giving them punishment people, so they understand what they did wrong and what the punishment is about so they truly understand why the punishment is happening.

I seriously hate the notion that you must ALWAYS respect your elders even when they are blatantly disrespectful or even abusive toward you. I also hate that physical discipline is so normalized in Asian countries. You are so right about respecting someone who does not respect you. Ofc respect is expected, but the moment they give you a reason to not respect them anymore that’s that.
