People need to understand that mc ending up with the so called "green flag" doesn't make a story great. Literacy is where you explore so many different things and tropes. For a community that always complained about toxic yaoi being nothing but rape slop but from what I've seen from most of the people in the community, it's just oversimplification of every character. Ian and TJ were toxic but there was complexity and nuance to their relationship if the readers actually tries to see their point of view from a psychological standpoint. Literacy is being able to explore the uncomfortable shit. You can examine toxic dynamics, unhealthy attachment, power imbalances, obsession, manipulation, or conflicting perspectives without the story needing to hand you a morally spotless character at the end. And I'll die on the hill that Ian has never regress or has "no character development." Never has it been TJ that Ian wanted to leave behind. I'm not gonna write full on essay to help you see it but the old Ian would try to run away from everything with Jo. Wheather or not you understand that..idk. He wouldn't have emotional closure between him and TJ , he would be running to protect himself from feeling hurt, he would forced himself to move on and "testing his wretched fate" with the possibility of him having to feel guilty if something were to happened to Jo or his family due to his past life style. Instead he realized how Jo was self destructing, he kept Jo record clean and he personally gave Jo closure to what they have. Even in the dialogue in that chapter Ian talk about accepting this fate but it is not in a negative light as you think. He is choosing what he wants and he is choosing to accept whatever will come despite the possibility of him getting hurt or both of them getting hurt. He didn't run away.Him building that home isn't just for TJ but for himself just as much. Ian will never be the bird y'all want him to be or simplified him to be. He has always been a misunderstood character and it kinda crazy how Jo did in fact get a happy ending and is doing well on his own and somehow his fans are still pressed talking about I hope he is happy...
Despite it flaws in season 3, wetsand will always be a great series that gave me what I needed. Flawed, nuance and realistic characters.Ian remains one of the best written characters to me. His development, contradictions, and choices are so much more complex than people give him credit for,and Ian and TJ’s relationship has so much complexity and nuance that it will always be the highlight of the story for me.
