To be honest with yall the first few chapters of reading the next arc in the novel was a bit jarring because the shift in the tone is huge. It's almost like reading a whole new story centered around a magic academy. It's fun in It's own way but it took some time getting used to while I was binge reading. Maxi becomes quite a formidable person. She's really smart and cool and although we saw glimpses of it and I was always a huge fan of her even when she was powerless she was very much overshadowed as a character by the tyrants around her. She really had a scientist/researcher kinda vibe and it was so nice. And honestly I didn't miss riftan at all... at this point in the story I was so fed up with the man that not seeing his angry face was welcome...

Next would be my thoughts about this recent progression so feel free to skip if you just wanted spoilers

Reading the webtoon now and some of the comments, I can see that her making that decision on her own and so hastily wasn't the best choice but can you honestly blame her? Her husband told her "DO YOU WANT ME TO LOCK YOU UP" just because she said she wanted to testify in front of the king... for the crimes done against her and because she wanted to help him... is that a man you can be honest with when you tell him you're gonna leave for 4 years to protect him from losing everything he worked for his whole life and for you to stay with him with a clear conscious? Would he even listen for ten minutes is my question...
Also has he ever consoled her when he left her behind to go risk his life? At least she's gonna be in a safe environment for 4 years. If you argue that it's his job as a knight and it's a given I would argue back being a mage is gonna be her job so it's a given... he didn't think of leaving the country with her when they could both do it safely because he does care about anatol. Sure not as much as he cares for her but they would both leave their hearts behind... fleeing a country isn't fun and romantic... what would happen to all the people living in anatol? Do they not matter? getting caught up in the politics of the damn nobility their homes would probably be destroyed after they leave. but now he wants to defect with all the military power of the region. More importantly as much as he would be a valuable talent to the neighboring country, he would be seen as someone that betrayed his king and country once before... do you really think his life would be better there? He would have even less power, freedom and respect. And the fact that he did it all for a "woman" in a world that women are not even seen as human let alone equals makes everything worse. But her becoming a mage is only helpful to everyone... not only do they get a cool mage, it strengthens anatol and mends the broken relationship with the mage tower. It strengthens Riftan's and anatol's political position. It also shuts her father forever basically. The only downside is that they would miss eachother which I guess is important but whatever I can't relate...
I'm not sure if maxi has though about things this thoroughly but sometimes even if an author doesn't think of something their world building and character writing are so human that you can clearly see beyond what they tried to convey. That is something I find a bit regrettable with this story because the author doesn't really flesh out Maximilian and her though process to the audience as much as she can and just portrays her as impulsive and emotional. And even if she is those things, to me her decisions are always the best choice logically... but I've never been in love so I wouldn't know how grave it would feel to be apart for four years... honestly I don't think I could ever love someone like riftan anyways so I'd happily get away but I digress...
also this one is huge spoilers ****
The fact that riftan didn't want to see her midway through her studies when she had a chance to visit because he's a manchild that would rather sulk than be happy about their reunion further proves my point... mind you maxi was just happy getting glimpses of him in a warzone while she was working tirelessly to save people... so I wonder who loves the other one more??? and I got so mad that that's where I left the novel for now... I don't even feel motivated to pick it back up after so long >____>
***** end of spoiler******
Sorry for always ranting so long in this comment section but this story riles me up like no other ><
