I can't take it seriously if you're gonna say Ian has savoir complex because the only character that can be said about is Jo. Two truths can exist at the same time. Yes we see him guilty but he also fucking love TJ. Yes he saw himself as making Jo self destructing but that doesn't mean he love Jo just like he did TJ. People seriously need to wrap their head around that you can definitely like feel affection for different people. I need people to realize that after he got out of his meeting with big Teddy, his called and his meeting with Jo was never him about him eloping with Jo. He was gonna go there to break up with Jo, with or without TJ interference and leave. Literally already showing that he is willing to choose himself. TJ showed up and Ian's plan is still the same he still left for himself and what we saw from his dialogue is literally indicating that he love TJ but for now he is choosing himself to be better by himself to able to change and never repeat those same actions and whatever come next he will accept it.Realistically and humanely is that not character development? People can grow with flaws and not be morally spotless.
Jo, at least to Ian was attractive. He felt attraction and fondness toward Jo. He didn't lie when he said that what they have was real and if he could he would continue but he couldn't and he can't forced it because he loves someone else. And that literally normal and genuine. He do care and hold affection for Jo but can he love Jo like Jo or himself wants? No, because as he said his heart was with another person. Their affection were never fake but that doesn't mean Ian choosing TJ is all to benefit Jo and punished himself nor that it mean he doesn't love TJ. TJ isn't a safe option either. Ian inner dialogue and everything that we have seen he is aware that they are unhealthy, he literally talk about not wanting to go back to what they used to and after everything he still choose TJ because surprised surprised his feelings isn't just rooted in guilt. He could have easily elope with Jo but he didn't as well because despite all the possibility of what they could have he just couldn't love Jo like he did with TJ so it's like? Please think about it TJ left a cleared path for Jo and Ian but he asked TJ to leave with him, he said he didn't want to go back to the past. He was going to leave for himself with or without TJ. And when he got shoot he literally look at TJ and called TJ an idiot when TJ asked him why he took that bullet for him. And we see him answering TJ question in what chapter 99 and it was because he love him. Hence the "I love you." Which was a reply to TJ asking why he took the damn bullet for him.
Basing his character development in relation to his guilt and his relationship with TJ just missed the point. This is why I say he is emotionally complex and very much humane. His development is realistic. It isn't outright spotless or being shown explicitly or a sudden big shifts.His development isn't contingent upon rejecting TJ. Ian can hold or have those lingering bit of feeling and still recognize what best for him to develop and still loved TJ. Ian desires for change and him trying to matters.
