It’s always this insane toxic shit. Obviously, I dropped it, because I’m not sacrificing my peace of mind over some fictional character. And yeah, I know some people genuinely love reading toxic stories, and that’s fine. You can read whatever the hell you want. But what you people constantly fail to understand is that writing toxic behavior and justifying toxic behavior are two completely different things.
Every time someone criticizes an ML’s behavior, there’s always a crowd rushing in with, “But he had a traumatic upbringing,” “But people are morally gray,” “You need to understand why he behaves like this,” blah blah fucking blah. Nobody said you aren’t allowed to understand a character. But understanding why someone is abusive doesn’t magically make what they did less abusive. Some of you go so deep into explaining the psychology of these characters that you completely forget what it actually means to be a victim. In fiction, you can comfortably analyze why a rapist became a rapist, talk about his childhood, his trauma, his circumstances, and call him “complex.” But I highly doubt most of you would be nearly as eager to “understand the circumstances” if you encountered an actual victim and perpetrator in real life. Fiction gives people a safe space to entertain moral positions they would never tolerate in reality, and then they act shocked when someone calls them out for it.
So yeah, this story is toxic. I don’t like it. I dropped it. I’m not reading hundreds of chapters just to convince myself that I should understand or sympathize with a character who behaves like this. If you enjoy that kind of story, go read it. Nobody is stopping you. But stop acting like criticizing the toxicity means someone “doesn’t understand complex characters.” Sometimes people understand perfectly well and simply don’t fucking like what they’re seeing.
And obviously, some of you are still going to come into my comments with the classic, “Then why don’t you just drop it?” or “Why are you here criticizing it if you don’t like it?” Because it’s my fucking opinion? It’s a public comment section. I’m allowed to read something, dislike it, criticize it, and then move the fuck on. Dropping a story doesn’t mean I suddenly lose the ability to have an opinion about it. You don’t have to agree with me, and I don’t give a shit if you don’t.
