It's very common of parents to abandon their children in fiction like in "How to Prey on the Master" which was a less extreme situation, but still abandonment in my opinion.
I can't think of any others right now, but that was the most recent one I can think of.
Maybe we will get a better explanation later? You never know going by chapter to chapter
Why couldn't the author come up with any reason why his parents left? It's not like they left their adult child and went to travel the world. They abandoned their child for no reason at all. The author could've made up any reason like the mother being sick and needing to recuperate somewhere else but even then, they would've kept in touch and have him visit them instead. What kind of stupidity is this????
