love can be born from ambiguity; ambiguity is a plausible signal of love. that is just how some relationships start, or continue to be. perhaps it feels uncomfortable because it is unconventional, but its very real (and realistic). and that does not make it them any less devoted. in this case i think the ambiguity comes from a few different types of love (romantic, sexual and familial) blending together
i actually do think touma fell for sen. the author makes a point in showing this in a 'cinematic', show not tell way. he wants sen's attention (even back then sen was on touma's mind), admires how he puts himself forward, and wishes to protect his innocence despite not half-disliking it. and most importantly, started seeing sen as part of his family. his words come off as sharp, which may seem dismissive until u realise hes saying it for (what he think is) sen's good.
of course i too wish this is further explored! feels like some character points are not explored enough (for example, sen's music career) and at this point it feels like a semicolon
