I would say that it's not even reversing or inverting misogyny when people pull the "dark romance" bs in bl. it's all the same ideology and power structure. also, I'm very much including the straight "dark romances" in my initial reply, because people like to act like getting off to a fantasy featuring standard patriarchal dynamic of power and sexual terrorism, control, and submission #834748 but written by a woman to an audience of women who are into that is this awesome subversion of patriarchal ideology. sure, it flies against notions of sexually pure and chaste women to be openly and actively indulging in intense and even violent sexual narratives, but it's not a challenge to patriarchal ideology in the end to uncritically create and consume them, just because people (the subjugated) are opting into it. that's the source of my complaint and frustrations with that talking point. regardless of the genders involved, so it's "standard" for dark romance to be all about one party leveraging power and violence to dominate and exploit another party and making that integral to the emotional dynamic between them. what about challenging the notions beneath that dynamic? what about switching things up? shaking the table? what about imagining different ways of engaging with sex and power?
