I actually like Ian, it’s clear from even his first assault on Ben that he wants Ben to like it if he can. Like the villain with morals. He does foreplay, stops when Ben is unconscious, and does aftercare. Regardless yes 100% rape, and you cannot erase that fact by showing us a worse form of assault…this author has entirely abandoned the plot to seemingly backtrack and try to use a disgusting gang rape scene as perhaps a way to juxtapose with Ian?
