Sexual assault isn't taken the most seriously there, and what happened isn't even being considered rape by the characters because there, it ISN'T considered rape. Rape has to involve violence or intimidation, not the absence of proper consent. Furthermore, men raping other men wouldn't even be considered rape, but quasi-rape or indecent assault, because rape requires male genitalia inserted into female genitals (strict definition)
And on the other hand, family is a HUGE THING culturally. Like, to get a job or an apartment or anything, they literally consider who your family is and your parents etc. To be an orphan and not have a family or any living relatives in Korea super fucks you over, you loose out on the ability to get decent jobs and housing and loans etc even a lot of colleges won't accept you
There is also a LOT of social stigma involved, the assumption that you don't have family or your family doesn't associate with you would label you as the person who is messed up
People just cutting their family off is a HUGE deal there, and I am assuming the bottom is thinking of all the trauma he's gotten from being orphaned, and doesn't want to inflict it in his love (for what he views as his own mess up)
