I think they lacked the confidence to, either thinking it wouldn't be popular on it's own, or couldn't figure out enough plot to give it. In any case, I agree with you; it's not cool to advertise a cute story and throw in something toxic. Honestly though, even the main couple feels like the author struggled to know what to do: the "let's have sex with each other for practice" plot is dropped fairly early on, but it takes a LONG time for them to realize their feelings for each other anyway--it literally takes someone trying to kill the uke for this to happen. I think the author isn't the best at storytelling.
