People are going to get mad and thats fine! But I don't think people are seeing Riftan for what he truly stands for. Yes, he is being a asshole. And he sucks at communicating. But it makes sense. All Riftan knows is to fight for what he wants. He has built a life for himself, as a bottom feeder, through his pain and blood. Maxi is the one person he has always wanted, his #1 dream, he would Sacrifice anything for her. He fought his way to the top to be worthy of her. He saw her as a beautiful treasure that he needed to protect and shelter. Never allowing her to see the dirty parts of the world. However, she changes. Maxi grows and overcomes her difficulties. She pushes the ideas that Riftan has and shows over and over again that she isnt fragile. That he doesnt need to stand in front of her but beside her. Riftan is literally fighting with the image he created of her and what she is truly like. What he treasures the most wants to leave him. He feels like she abandoning him. Not realizing that she is doing this for both of them. Riftan isnt abusive, Riftan is scared of losing his one treasure. The one thing he can truly call HIS. But again he has a horrible way of communicating cause he was never taught how to communicate. Much like Maxi needs to change and grow so does Riftan. He has to lose his treasure to understand its value and realize what that treasure really needs to flourish. I dont hate Riftan character. He is a character that has a lot of depth to him.
