I've watched this happen in RL (and lived it myself). I don't know what happens to the brain when it *likes* someone, but OMG does it turn you stupid!!

I guess the story wouldn’t progress if they were more stubborn but a pet peeve of mine is when the mc starts of strong willed and smart and somehow in front of these assholes are so weak and easily moved I haaaaate it
