I know he seems cold, but they told us how he was brutally trained and conditioned from a young age to be an emotionless tool. Thalia on the other hand was never taught how to handle herself, neither of them learned self preservation or normalcy. They had eachother for a while as kids, and that kindling is the only reason Varkas has any humanity left, and although Thalia’s obsession was unhealthy for herself, she was clinging onto the one figure she actually ever trusted. So its pitiful and sad, as much as she is a villainess Varkas is a baddie. At least we understand the rest of them are just as bad if not worse… except for the knight who is just a sweetie pie.
