If you're gonna read a love triangle story and apply rigid irl rules and some overused tik tok saying onto a piece of literacy you're just essentially mischaracterizing the mc. He never even loved Jo. Jo was just someone that happens to have the chance to stay in Ian life a lil longer

Ian’s one and only love has always been TJ. But he wanted a relationship where he didn’t have to hide and he wanted a life away from the gang. His want requires a TJ to give up his “career,” money and power.
TJ was selfish because he wanted Ian, money and power, disregarding Ian’s desire to get out of the gang environment.
Jo was selfish for disregarding Ian’s wishes of only wanting a one night stand, pursuing a friendship and then demanding physical exclusivity with him without titles. He knew Ian was in love with TJ and literally said he didn’t care because he knew he wanted Ian. He also prevented them from reconciling after their fight. Took advantage of TJ’s absence to never leave Ian’s apartment. Ian wanted to end things 3x and Jo refuses to accept it because it never matter to him what Ian wanted.
Ian grew up abused and neglected lacking love and affection. The one time his deadbeat mom showed him any kindness he was smiling from ear to ear. He craves that’s affection. He met young TJ and recognized right away that TJ felt something for him because of the gaze that alway followed him. Ian literally said TJ’s obsession fed his self esteem and self worth. And he saw the same as obsessive look in Jo’s eyes.
Ian didn’t fall for Jo. Ian was reminded of a younger TJ that hasn’t been corrupted by the violence and desire for money and power. A younger TJ who only wanted Ian. That’s what caught his attention after Jo kept coming back to him. Ian felt that TJ wouldn’t give up the gang for him so he decided to leave to not get in the way of TJ’s ambition, not because he stopped loving TJ. Then TJ disappeared and made him feel abandoned and Jo decided to stick around and filled the void left by TJ. Did Ian come to care for Jo, yes! But love I don’t think so!
Would someone in love be constantly thinking of another person? Would someone in love have to keep convincing themselves that the person they love (TJ) didn’t care about them anymore to push themselves to move on with someone else? Would someone in love always appear checked out and distracted (Jo’s own words) Would someone in love appear lonely with someone practically living with them (Toby’s words) Would someone in love think about another man when Jo asked them to move away together. Would someone in love propose running away together with another man when he knows you and your family are being threatened by gang members? Would someone in love need to go collect his couple jewelry with his ex before skipping town with you? It’s fucken hilarious how Jo stans read all of them and think Ian fell for Jo. Where? The flower he never bought Jo? The numerous time he tried to break things off with him? Or the way Ian ran away from a crime scene leaving Jo behind with dying man!!! Ian’s monologue when said he tried to run away but his heart has been tethered to one place from the beginning!!! He could never give his heart to Jo because his heart was always with TJ. He tried to accept Jo and love him back but he couldn’t. They were never meant to be more than friends.
Jo tried to win Ian over and failed
Ian tried to get over TJ with Jo and failed
TJ tried to have it all and failed.
But at the end of the day and the story, the two people that felt RECIPROCAL love with one another got together and are living happily ever after.
