Maybe the author wants some fresh plot stories unlike the usual settings of a BL story. It's cute. It's new. As a BL reader, it's a refreshing story.
It isn't really "fresh" for me, though; the story is almost indistinguishable from modern day, since sexuality issues don't feel as severe, fashion isn't that different, and tech plays no major role in the story.
I'm still confused why the author wanted this to take place 30 years ago, especially since they could've ended it with them going to America or another country to get married now. Also think they could've done more; the bulk of this was figuring out their relationship and issues, and their futures are just starting, so I'm surprised there wasn't another season or two. Still, very good story.
