Oh my gosh!
Gammar errors annoy the hell out of me. Unfortunately, most people don't care. Or worse, don't know any better. Kudos to our education systems.
So, I'm forced to suffer in silence.
Total pet peeve.
Another is *your & you're*
Every time it's supposed to be you're, your is used.
There's also *to & too*
Well, I just truly appreciated you post
As someone living in the uk who was not born here and had to take a bunch of extra English lessons, native English speakers piss me tf off. None of them actually understand grammar. It’s genuinely concerning considering this is their native tongue and they still don’t understand it! This is my third language and yet, here I am doing great. I wish native speakers would stop using wrong vocab and using shortcuts to say what they want to say. I’m less likely to get mad at it than you OP since I’m surrounded by morons (I’d be very very exhausted if I did get mad) but it is a huge pet peeve of mine.
As someone from the uk… what LOL. why are you speaking in such a hostile way towards us. Some people here you may be around are perhaps from poorer backgrounds and thus their vocabulary reflects that, as unfortunately a lot of the UK is not well off. you can’t blame them for that. Some of what you may be mentioning is what is called “colloquialism” where despite knowing proper grammar and sentence structure, for verbal conversations things get switched out due to things like, common sayings, community you grew up in, and flow of conversation. It does NOT mean the way these people talk equates to them being dumb or not knowing proper grammar etc etc, but that there is a difference between conversational english depending on where you are, written english, and english that is being graded for an exam for example. Now, if they are rich, then I don’t care about this conversation lol I don't care for the rich.
Babe. I went to school in England. I got taught separately for both foreigner and for natives. It’s not about socioeconomics. All public schools get given the same curriculum. I went to school in both poor and richer areas like the commuter belt. I’m saying that foreigners get taught a more in depth English than natives do because I WAS TAUGHT MORE IN DEPTH AS A FOREIGNER IN MY EXTRA ENGLISH LESSONS THAN IN MY NATIVE ENGLISH LESSONS!! What do you not get about that? It’s never been about socioeconomics. I’m poor rn. I never once said the way people talk makes them dumb. I said I’m surrounded by morons. Which is a whole other issue. It’s not solely because of their literacy rate. It’s about their knowledge as a whole. As for colloquialism, I don’t know why you’re trying to explain it to me as a foreign concept when I said “tf” and “OP”. It’s not colloquialism or slang. They just don’t know English. I had to peer mark exams. I should know. I got 8/9 in all my English papers so I was tutoring others in school. I know how poorly others use SPaG. It’s not just the uk. America ALSO has some of the worst (if not the worst) illiteracy rates in the world. Their reading comprehension is abysmal too. You’re trying to read me to filth but you didn’t even understand my original point. My point about being surrounded by morons still stands.
What I took away from Meowie_Yaoi's post was there's a problem with the education system. Not sure about the UK, but the US is terrible. Instead of raising people up, which would benefit them in the long run, they lower the standards. They don't want to hurt any feelings. But, all that does is lower the intelligence of the masses. Guess we're more malleable if we are less intelligent.
Im literally not trying to do any of what you claim. “You are trying to read me to filth” when? I read your comment and from how you spoke about yourself and those around you, assumed you were not a native British/english person/speaker to the point that you DIDN'T go to school here etc but instead arrived here whilst older. I was trying to inform you what you may be experiencing due to such, despite your strange hostility towards British people. Never once in your original comment did you elude to these specifics you are bringing up now and acting like I'm missing the point, when again they were not mentioned. You had a extremely holier than though attitude within your comment and spoke as if everyone you have met personally is the whole of the UK when it is in fact, not, obviously. “I wish native speakers would stop using wrong vocab and using shortcuts to say what they want to say” this is quite literally a normal thing for any native speaker of any language, as someone half non english heritage myself.
It’s not a hostility towards British people. I find ANY country that fails to teach native speakers proper SPaG while focusing those lessons on foreigners only to be a country that failed its people. That being said, I’ve lived in many places in the uk and the work ethic of so many students across the country is severely lacking. I don’t know why you’re making it sound like I’m saying something out of line. If you live in a country, you should have full proficiency in that language. That’s a very normal stance to have. If I lived in any other country and I was surpassing natives in language class, I’d feel the same way. It’s not about knowing every individual but you can tell how it is if you take a sample from different parts of the uk. That’s literally how ALL research is conducted.
Also, I said I had to take extra lessons for English. That implies in school because I didn’t say “I needed to take an English course”. You’re the one who assumed things instead of asking. I wasn’t talking to you to begin with. You inserted yourself and now are mad at me for not explaining things to your satisfaction?
Thirdly, using words incorrectly and interchanging words that aren’t interchangeable is a HUGE issue worldwide. It’s not normal. It’s normalised. BIG difference. Same thing with shortcuts. People can’t pronounce Worcester so they say “wash your sister” instead. That’s a shortcut. I’m not talking about slang and I’m not talking abbreviations. I’m talking about actually failing to use words correctly. The amount of times I see British people mess up “they’re” “their” and “there” or “bear” and “bare” or “your” and “you’re” is atrocious. These are basic words. I still see people use “affect” and “effect” wrong. Yes, the uk is ranked fourth in proficiency but to become “proficient”, you need to be B2. But that’s not true proficiency. True proficiency is C1 and true fluency is C2. They lowered the proficiency level to make it so that more people are considered “proficient” even if they wouldn’t be by normal standards.
Finally, I noticed you abandoned your socioeconomic stance. I’m only bringing it up because I want you to know that I noticed it. It seems you only brought it up to mention that you hate the rich.
If you’d like to bring up an actual counterpoint, I’d be happy to hear it. If not, I’m going to be ignoring you from now on.
Yep! Exactly that! If they don’t teach you, you won’t know how to fight back. That’s why your history lessons are so weird between states. It’s a shame. You really could have been the best nation or at least one of the best if only your leaders chose to make education a priority and made it easy to get higher education. That’s why the saying is “knowledge is power”. The uk has a good education system but their English classes fall short because foreigners get better lessons than natives do. For foreigners, this is an amazing country to learn in. For natives, I don’t know if they’d feel the same after attending a supplementary English class like I did.
It is a shame. The US used to be one of the countries that excelled in education, but that was decades ago.
Schools should be teaching an unbiased lesson system. Unfortunately, it seems unable to do that.
Thankfully, my sisters are teaching their kids to question everything & form their own opinions after looking at all angles.
The US was created with freedom at it's core. But, the indoctrination happening in early education is doesn't promote freedom of thought.
Even the was teachers are hired & kept employed is skewed. I recall, in junior high, we had a younger teacher that made learning fun. Doing silly activities, but the comedy engaged more of you senses making learning lessons easier. Unfortunately, the higher ups didn't agree & she was forced to conform to a boring lesson plan.
The method of teaching is wrong. Sure, there are some kids that reading the textbooks & memorizing works for. But, for most, it isn't so easy. I don't believed there are stupid children. Only children who have minds that need to be stimulated in a different way. Doing activities & engaging more of your senses as you learn solidifies the lessons in your mind.
I do hope we can correct the education system. But, it's hard to be optimistic when the indoctrination has made it into elementary school. It used to only be colleges that had professors that taught a biased lesson. At that point, it didn't ha e as much impact on a student's mind because, at that point, they'd have formed their own opinions.
I can only hope enough parents teach their kids to think for themselves. And, those that will lead this count in the future will correct the mistakes of their predecessors.
Genuinely what the hell are you on about LMAO you gotta be kidding me. I didn't abandon my social economics stance dude what are you talking about. I just didnt bring it up again because i said it the first time, i said what i needed to say as i litetally explained, i thought you may not know this due to being new to the uk as you didnt include such info in your second comment, that you did in the first. thus i didnt bring it up again. Its not a big deal, this is weird asf

I’m one of those annoying grammar freaks (in my head, I don’t correct others) & manhwa is NOTORIOUS for ignoring the subjunctive clause (see below°°°). which is….fine. whatever. it matches how most ppl (incorrectly) speak. but, BUT! bbuuuuut – t’was too much for me this chapter! a specific dialogue bubble said "what if I WAS waiting?" and I’m going crazy bc if ya gonna emphasize that one word (was) then MAKE IT THE CORRECT WORD (were).
reason I’m so irked by spelling & grammar mistakes, is bc whether translators / QC are real ppl or AI; how the hell publishers been letting 90% of manhwa I read be full of flaws??? when there are freaks out here like me with no degree but struggle to read erroneous English published works (Twilight was a nightmare for me ya'll) like pls, ffs, hire folks like us to actually utilize this knowledge for good instead of it feeling so annoyingly useless in our noggins!
I wish I weren’t this way, but can’t help it; and I can’t be the only one! (lol unintended use of subjunctive clause right there)
°°° subjunctive clause °°°
• "if" or "wish" MUST be followed by "were" not "was"
• "was" indicates past tense, and something hypothetical ("wished"/wondered aka "if") cannot be referred to in past tense ("was") as though it has come to pass
• "were" fulfills requirement for contextual specification & appropriate tense when referring to a possibility
• this rule does not demand "if" or "wish" always be followed by "were"; only that the proper tense ("were" not "was") be used should a phrase necessitate the word in an "if" or "wish" statement
p.s. this is why I highly appreciate a handful of very dedicated & efficient scanslator teams. they’re comprised of ppl from god knows what background but the ppl who take the jobs feel confident in their ability. it shows bc I can’t tell you how often the grammar & spelling is near flawless, and far better than the official. not saying the translation itself is always perfect. but whoever writes it & checks it actually do their unpaid god damn job. a stark contrast from the AI translation slop these days.
