Obviously the mom dying was no one's fault and they were all kids, but I do get the older brother being traumatized and making a grave choice in grief. I can't 100% side with the MC since he's a troublemaker and this was a job he was hired to do, so I can't see him as completely sincere. Both brothers need therapy, and obviously there's some kind of relationship if the older brother keeps him there rather than banish him or kill him, too. Salvage what you can.
