To be fair this is a "straight" guy whos obsessed with fitting in and avoiding stereotypes partially due to racially motivated situations. The "im not gay, is it gay to do this" thing is a boarderline basic part of the gay/bi awakening especially in a homophobic society/area.
Not to say he isn't being homophobic, but rather hes obviously aware he still has feelings and isn't willing nor ready to accept them.
