I feel like people are making a big deal out of Riftan’s ultimatum. To me it’s like any normal r/s that’s going to become long distance. You know yourself well enough that an LDR doesn’t work for you, great. Your partner has no right to force you to wait for them, and YOU have no right to force them to stay.

Riftan giving Maxi an ultimatum is honestly the best way to go. Would you rather he let Maxi go and grow deeply resentful and spiral at Maxi for leaving, or worse, force her to stay?

Some readers here lowkey want to have their cake and eat it too. Maxi gets to leave Riftan for four years, but Riftan isn’t allowed to decide that’s not something he wants and end the r/s? Let’s turn the tables: if Riftan had told Maxi he wanted to grow as a knight and asked her to wait while he goes off on a 4-year journey, would you not agree that Maxi has EVERY RIGHT to say that’s not what she wants as his wife, and get a divorce?

Except they're married? You're just going to divorce your spouse because they have to go away for a few years? They're not bf/gf going off to different colleges or some shit. Not to mention Riftan had gone off to battle (which was going to take who knows how long and he might die) and was more than okay making Maxi stay behind.

She's just going to magic school for 3 years. It'd be like your spouse having to go away for work or something. It's fine if he leaves her at the castle for X amount of days/months but she can't leave the castle without him? Any time Maxi tries to take initiative with something (even if it's dumb) he doesn't try to understand her and shoots her down.

huh.. when u put it like that it gives a different perspective. but the thing is we only have Maxi's pov.,and she is right.. its a character development and growth for herself.. Riftan on the other hand.. loves Maxi so immensely that he would burn the world only if they could stay together. kinda pisses me that he's only thinking of Maxi and what he thinks is best for her.. he's not listening to what Maxi is saying..at all.. i understand that he doesn't want to be apart from her, but c'mon man.. you have a whole territory to run too.. and a knighthood to lead. yes he might have trauma ,and he doesn't want to be like his mom.. waiting.. but.. i am hoping.. he will have growth too.. because thats just sad that he'd rather die than to let Maxi go

Uh why don’t you read this and answer it. If you share the same view in that Maxi is unfair to divorce Riftan were he to leave on some self improvement journey, then that’s fine. The only problem is if you are a hypocrite. Note: If you say “ohh but Maxi didn’t leave Riftan whem he went off to war?”, that’s irrelevant. There’s a diff between Maxi not leaving of her own choice and Maxi being forced not to leave, which we have no evidence of.

Yeah definitely, like if your partner decides they need to grow and have to be apart from you as a consequence, you have every right to decide you can’t wait for them. I think some readers romanticize relationships as “oooh true love can overcome anything” and then they ignore the practical difficulties. Being away from your partner with little contact can be hard for some people. I’d never fault my own partner for deciding an LDR wasn’t for them.

“Except they're married? You're just going to divorce your spouse because they have to go away for a few years?” yeaa i don’t like this. you’re minimizing and invalidating people’s needs in a relationship. idk if u know but usually it’s husbands who tell their wives that they need to work overseas and move up in their career, and the wife is expected to suck it up or uproot their family to be close with the husband.

What is wrong with you people seriously. Zero reading comprehension skills. They are married in the medieval times not current times. He was forced to go to war both times. He never went willing. Maxi even followed him the second time secretly because she didn’t want to be apart either. Maxi isn’t leaving for months but minimum 3 years. They don’t know what can happen in 3 years. They can’t meet and they can’t communicate during that time. She made the decision without even telling him first let alone discuss it. They were already separated for 3 years and he went through hell just to be reunited with her. They’ve hardly been reunited for 1 year and they’re separating again. He’s valid in feeling hurt and betrayed that his beloved wife is leaving and there’s no certainty they’ll ever be together again.
