I think the thing is with the ML is that he's so self-absorbed bc he's so used to the whole world revolving around him since he was a kid that he doesn't even pause to consider how the other person might be feeling. But this kind of character trait CAN be redeemed depending on the author's execution like you said if the yearning is convincing enough, so it's currently up in the air rn im not super hopeful tho bc not many authors can convey this part well

To be fair to the ML, he probably couldn't tell that the MC is clearly having a traumatic response to the fire alarm (I bet his dad probably died in a fire) so he's trying to be normal about it even tho he's clearly struggling, and the ML doesn't know and isnt picking up on the clues bc he's a himbo. Him letting the MC throw up in his hands without making a fuss over it shows he does care in his own way tho, he's just not aware of what's going on with the MC bc to him a false fire alarm isn't a big deal
