I don't like the ending, it's completely unreasonable and fundamentally breaks Shinpei's character. And since it's a happy ending anyway, I'm gonna headcanon that Satoko lived, but due to certain conditions she couldn't meet with Shinpei for a long time, and her letters wouldn't reach him either. Like, basically anything reasonable, just not whatever happened after that one line in the letter

We're talking about Shinpei, the type of man who would visit her grave every day until he died, and you're telling me he wouldn't have caught wind of her being alive?

I was thinking she could be abroad for her treatment, and considering the timeline, sending letters from one country to another would've been a real hassle and might get lost along the way. 50 years is a huge time. Satoko could have been comatose, that'd skip 10 years, but I'm not sure how to bridge the rest 40 years...

I'm putting off Shinpei being unreachable because 50 years is a long time not to be able to track down one person and deliver the letters. Especially with Mitsuhara by their side.

I wonder if the island demolishing would play differently with this headcanon?

Satoko might have returned recently and specifically got Kotaro to deliver that letter because she wanted to surprise Shinpei.

(This headcanon also has plot holes... I'll have to refine it.)

I have 1% hope the anime will take a different approach.
