But Leyla was torn between loving him and keeping her dignity as a woman. She promised Uncle Bill to become a good woman only for Matthias to make her a mistress.
But then she loved him. She denied it many times but her response to their love making revealed her genuine feelings for the Duke of Arkavis. And yet they were in a very complex set up started by a truce which ruined whatever "affection" they have for each other.
THE ANGST!
The fucking angst.
Especially on that certain chapter where Matthias gave Leyla a choice to either go the annex or just go home after she was humiliated by Claudine. (NOT SURE IF I REMEMBER THIS RIGHT, BUT YEAH, JUST SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENED.) And Matthias really meant it, like Leyla could go home in peace. He won't bother her knowing that she went through a lot.
However, Leyla still chooses to go the annex because she thought that going to her home would only bring Matthias to where Uncle Bill is. So, she waited inside the annex, but she didn't lit up any fire. It was cold. It was dark. She just sat there in silence, patiently waiting for him to come around.
When Matthias came home, seeing her in that state, his heart clenched for reasons he couldn't explain himself. All he knew that his lover, who was supposed to be receiving all the favors from a duke like him, was here in the cold, all alone—hiding herself because she was merely a mistress.
...of Leyla.
Her smile.
Her affection.
Her love.

THE ANGST IS HITTING THE RIGHT NERVES!
