In middle of all the hates about Geonpil, I nvr hated him even for once. Maybe bcoz I sympathised with him and I think he is such a morally gray character. Did u guys notice how geonpil’s character was explained by Beom’s existence? While Beom was a spirit living inside a mountain all alone who would imitate other ppl just to live among them, Geonpil was an orphan all alone who also always imitate as the person that others wanted to see him as just to live among them too. Geonpil nvr had something or someone he could call his “own” and ppl he thinks of as family previously also thought of him as a burden. Their son was interested in him and so he gave that guy what he wanted and later even that guy started ignoring him. And then he met Hyung and his grandma, who showed him what it felt like to have a warm home with ppl who genuinely loved him. Every time he was about to return to his messed up life, Hyung pulled him out. Geonpil became addicted to that comfort. But Hyung was always a precious family to him, He nvr saw him in other way but he couldn’t reject him either bcoz it wasn’t just the house he was afraid to lose, he was afraid to lose the life with the person who was so precious to him too. It’s easy to say he could’ve just rejected Hyung, but things would’ve nvr stayed the same. He also used Hyung bcoz that’s how he learnt to fill the voids from his past experiences. Hyung nvr said “no” either. And talking about rejection, Hyung nvr directly confessed his love either; he just gave signs and hoped Geonpil would confess first. You can’t force someone to change their feelings for you, no matter how you treat them. Hyung helped Geonpil on his own accord, and Geonpil nvr asked for those helps. Hyung was controlling about where Geonpil went and whom he met, and even tried using spells to make him fall in love. Idk how u all missed these toxic sides of Hyung. Just bcoz u help someone, you don’t own their life or feelings. Maybe I understand bcoz I was in a similar situation. Someone promised to help me, but when he fell for me, I couldn’t accept or reject him bcoz I was afraid of losing that help. Eventually, he stopped contacting me and nvr helped me again. But how was it my fault? I nvr asked him to fall for me…And the relationship between Hyung and Geonpil also reminds me of my first love too… We were happy as friends, but after becoming lovers, he became controlling and possessive. We eventually grew distant and stayed friends again. I learnt that not every close relationship has to become romantic. Some rltns are better as friends. Even with my roommates, I realized that liking someone from afar doesn’t mean they’ll be the same when u actually live with them. It became hard to accept the sides you weren’t aware of. And that’s what happened between Geonpil and Hyung. Hyung wasn’t in love with him, he was in love with the version he had created in his mind from their first meeting. The reason he loves Beom bcoz he is someone who accepted all his(G) sides, whether kind and bright or gloomy and selfish, and made him feel that he could finally have someone of his “own” without losing himself. With beom, he didn’t feel like he was a burden. The whole massage of this story is literally that - don’t lost urself just to fit into someone else’s world. Right person will love you for who you are, and u won’t ever feel like you are a burden when you are with them. Geonpil was truly a character full of flaws, and that’s exactly what made him feel so “human”. U don’t have to justify a character’s actions to understand their reasoning…Overall, even tho the ending was a bit rushed, I think the story was actually good.
