I also want to talk about these extra chapters I saw in the physical manga in volume 5. At the end of every physical volume of the manga is a bonus chapter of the story “until you pine for me” which is focused solely on Ayato and Toujou.
Volume 1 and 2 I think we’ve seen before. Volume 1, Toujou confessed and then retracted it as a joke which Ayato immediately sees through because Toujou looks straight into the eyes when he lies. Volume 2 is Ayato still trying to figure his feelings out and spectulating what dating Toujou would be like. He then has an outburst at Toujou because he’s been acting pretty normal in comparison and tells him to “take responsibility” for occupying his thoughts which Toujou takes as a win because he’s at least thinking about it,
Volume 3’s chapter is 4 months after the confession and takes place during the school festival prep. Toujou’s been scarce and Ayato thinks, and is bothered, that Toujou has perhaps moved on. In reality, Toujou’s just been genuinely busy because he’s part of the school council and has alot of responsibility getting the festival prep together. But also everyone, but mostly the girls of the school, keep going to him for help despite there being other council members. Ayato feels guilty for being self-centred about getting bothered when he hasn’t even given a reply in 4 months. He finally snaps and drags Toujou away from another pair of girls asking for help, snapping at them to go find the other council members. Toujou’s dragged to the infirmary to rest, but he says he doesn’t want to look lame in front of his crush. Ayato blurts out to dropthe cool act and that he’s in love with him too which is why he wants to help him.
Volume 4, a month has passed since the infirmary confession. Ayato and Toujou are going home together but Ayato is confused if he and Toujou are a couple yet, since they never really talked about becoming boyfriends despite there being mutual feelings. On the way back, they pass by a cafe special for a COUPLE’S ONLY parfait. Toujou suggests getting on and Ayato has a tsundere freak out that it’s just for couples. Toujou laughs and says he’s just joking but is once again lying about it via looking Ayato in the eye. Ayato picks up on it and drags him toward cafe to get the parfait, saying it’s fine since it’s for couples and more or less softcore confirming their relationship (Toujou’s hella happy about it). As they go toward the cafe, Hatano was walking nearby and overhears Ayato’s name.
Volume 5. It’s some random day. Ayato and Toujou were gonna walk home together when Hatano walks up and asks for Ayato. Thinking Ayato is the guy who saved him as a kid (which is actually Mob), he insistently asks if he remembers him until Toujou gets him to back off. This is cleared up the next day when Hatano asks him again more calmly alone. However, since then, Hatano begins to hang around Ayato alot, asking about his interests and to hang out. Toujou is bothered by this and asks to talk to Hatano alone while Ayato was busy. But it’s there that Toujou learns that Hatano is getting close to Ayato in order to get close to his brother Mob. Toujou then laughs at himself as he realises he’s actually a rather jealous type.
