These are memories from their past, before Esper Michael got rebooted into "Eve". I agree with you and I might add that "Michael" was very different (mentally) from Eve, because in the present, Eve has Adam to teach him how tk actually be a person.
adam is expecting eve to display something that neither he or the other espers were built or taught to have. he is expecting humanity from a being that was created to be a tool.
