1. thalia tries her best to never cry in front of varkas. he gets pretty torn up when she finally sobs so it didn’t feel like an important scene unfortunately... 2. the incense, while it has a calming effect, it basically dulls your senses, that’s how she can scrape by despite being in so much pain. the problem is that it’s a strong incense, and she’s inhaling a lot of it, all the time. anyway, she can barely get through inhaling it for 10 minutes max before she gets sleepy. the novel was emphasizing that varkas was staying by her side for hours, inhaling that same incense with her. that’s why she remarks that if he was there with her the whole time, he wouldn’t be able to stand there. that’s also why he looks drowsy and just done with talking to ayla. these are some of the moments where she feels torn between hating varkas and loving him, because despite his coldness, he will turn around and genuinely look after and care for her. just putting it out there for further analysis
