i got lowkey got flamed alive in a forum discussing the anime so i’m wondering if anyone here feels the same.

i’m not one to insist the manga is always better but in this instance, i couldn’t get through the anime without cringing… i just hated the pacing and how trope-ified everything became in the anime. it felt like watching witch hat atelier go through layers of stereotyping and anime cliches. granted i watched the show in sub, and i heard the voice acting in the dub is actually fantastic, so i may have to watch it in dub instead, but the japanese voice acting was very “i’m voice acting and this is my voice acting voice” if you get what i mean?

i do love the animation and it was amazing to see how fluid it was, i’m just questioning the storyboard. i don’t know how to explain but it just felt like they ripped panels straight from the manga and animated it panel by panel instead of creating a unique storyboard that actually flowed like a show.

but you tell me, should i just give the show a second chance or does anyone feel similar to me???

Genuinely what are you smoking? I’d love to take a hit of whatever you have if it means I could state my bad takes as confidently as you do.

what’s wrong with my take though? i tried it and just didn’t like it. should i have prefaced my opinion that im shaking and trembling instead of “confidently stating my take”?

The anime is really flowery tho? I don't understand by what you mean taking panels out the Manga, aren't they supposed to do that?? I'm not being rude or anything I'm just really confused on what you mean

i guess it’s because i come from a production background, but when i mean the storyboard just looks like they animated panel by panel, it doesn’t flow like a show, it flows like completely separate scenes just stitched together. it works in the manga because your eyes naturally read through panels like that, but in a show, it completely takes you out of the current setting you’re in. most of my problems were with the early episodes though, and all my gripes were settled later on, when it felt like the anime started establishing the greater witch hat atelier world, like in the manga. i understand that the anime has to start out a little more light-hearted as coco is being introduced to the world of magic through her magic-loving lens, so she would naturally see everything positively and with rose-tinted glasses, but those slice-of-life scenes were soooo trope-y to me and i had to just cringe through it before getting to later episodes. i also speak japanese and just find that type of voice acting to be naturally grating because no one speaks like that. but it’s a personal gripe, not a real criticism to the talent of the voice actors, even they do sound like “i’m voice acting and this is my voice acting voice” and i prefer more natural acting. that’s why i mention trying it in sub instead. it’s not that i hate the show, i just didn’t like it as much as the manga despite high expectations. also hated the ai usage for the backgrounds. kind of minor but with how woke witch hat is, kind of unacceptable to use generative ai in a work that promotes creativity and individuality

perhaps to make it even more clear about my panel vs. storyboard frame comparison, in manga, it’s generally okay for one panel to be conveying multiple gestures, dialogue, and people interacting, all in just one panel because the reader is doing the interpreting of the scene. in a storyboard for an animation, these will mostly or all be separated into multiple frames and scenes, so as to not make it so static or flat. and i’m not saying witch hat did this for every single scene and every episode, but it messes up the pacing of the show. my friend who hasn’t even read the manga brought it up that she loves the show but wishes the pacing was better. as for me, since i’ve read the manga serval times, im naturally directly comparing scenes with the manga to that of the show and think that they could have cut a lot of stuff out, added stuff in, or adjusted panels in the manga to fit as scenes and frames in a show. again, shirahama is a masterclass at panelling and page layout, but some pacing decisions only work in manga, and not everything translates to a working animated piece of art. i’ve been comparing witch hat atelier to another anime i’ve been watching this season and that is “goodbye, lara”, and maybe because goodbye, lara is an anime original, the pacing was extremely good and flowed fanatically. now it just started airing so hopefully they keep it up but maybe you could see what i’m getting it if you compared the two. however, their animation styles are completely different so i understand if that’s null and void in this discussion.

Ohhhh, okay that makes a lot of sense. I didn't notice much of anything (sadly) so I won't be able to give my opinion about it. Though maybe it's because I read manage that it just automatically made the scene look "flowy"? Oh well

and that's okay! similarly it seems like the show worked for majority of people. I can recognise that these gripes are only unique to me lmao

I could only struggle through a couple of episodes, I hated everything except for the unique interesting details. the world didn't make sense to me and when I don't like the mc it's just hard to follow the story (which is bad too imo). Don't listen to anyone, the majority always adores slop

reika July 6, 2026 4:44 am

love this gachalife-esque slop

    reika July 6, 2026 5:18 am

damn she is a 1 to 1 copy of the mc from “my happy marriage”

    reika July 6, 2026 5:20 am

wait no deadass this is the plot of my happy marriage with the annoying little sister and everything

    DatFujoshi July 6, 2026 1:08 pm

right?! plots like these were what was popular during my 7th grade days and as cringe as it is, it's like being a kid again
