I don't think anything was missing. CG finally realized that he had dragged Sam's name through the mud throughout the entire palace. The guards weren't just mocking him, they were turning something intimate between them into a public humiliation. And I think that was what hit CG the hardest. He never wanted people to look down on Sam, yet his own actions had caused exactly that. He had become the reason Sam was being humiliated, and I think that realization was his breaking point.
