Thats the point, until it happened to him he didn't understand human emotions. If you weren't raised in a society that raised you to be able to distinguish between emotions you wouldn't recognize love when you felt it. Ryo didn't realize what he felt towards Akira was love. He'd never known sadness, loneliness, or loss. It wasn't until the only thing he ever loved was lost to him that he understood why all these humans did and acted as they did.
hate the sin not the sinner.
I came after watching the new Netflix version of the anime. Legit, how can you not hate Ruo? He not only killed Devilman but also continued to trick him after he knew something was off about his personality. He then acted as if he cared for Akira and cried as he held his body...How can you do something like that and still have the nerve to cry? You killed your best friend and probably the only person who loved you.
