You know, i asked myself that question at first, but then i remembered that i was reading anime and that that is what people do in anime. I hope this helps.
Long ago in my country where Otaku was very rare to find where I grew up, they called every Anime/Manga that came from Japan just Anime. So in stores the little bit that was available was all in the Anime section.
As soon I moved out to a country that Otaku was more common I found out what Orakus are and that Anime was meant for cartoon and the comics are being called Manga

Heck I grew up not knowing that Pokemon, Digimon, Sailormoon, etc were actually Anime that came from Japan until I saw them in Anime section at the store. (Usually put under the kids section in other stores)

It is meant to underline how lost he is without his nearly omniscient/perfect partner. The reader is meant to see him as flawed in every possible way. He is weak, confused, fearful, unfaithful. He doubts, cowers, crys. He is not only tossed about on the sea of life rudderless but stays afloat only by clinging to the memories of his now absent partner. Drama.
