How I thought it went:
Ran saves rin.
Byaku nurses rin back to health, causing ran to be jealous.
Rin becomes attached to Ran, causing Byaku to be slightly jealous.
Order goes out to kill Rin.
Rin panics.
Ran takes Rin away, knife in hand.
Byaku never intended to actually kill Rin, just make it seem like he died because Rin's mother had already requested that he be saved.
Byaku slices off Ran's hand to stop Ran from killing Rin out of jealousy and thus betraying Byaku's true intentions of returning Rin to his mother.
Byaku heals Ran's hand and cements their relatioship.
