I don’t particularly think Chika is being half assed about his feelings. I get it how you naturally come to love someone you’ve known since childhood and how they are really dear to you. They are so dear that you can’t stand losing them. Knowing the other party it’s very likely they won’t feel the same even if you do confess but the other might be true as well that they do feel the same about you as you for them but it’s still really a gamble. Given his family situation and how his mother is divorced you can understand how he develops a fear of losing what’s the most important to him.If you might lose it one day forever you rather not have it in the first place. He’s not being half assed about his feelings,he’s just a coward. Him saying that on the psychological test was a test to see if there is a chance with Azuki or if she’s already in love with Hiragi. He knew from seeing her reaction. Him acting like a playboy started as something to see if Azuki could get jealous but that didn’t happen so he continued. He continued it to keep himself busy and hoping that one day she might actually feel something. It’s his way of going about the situation but that doesn’t mean it’s exactly right but it’s not exactly wrong either. I don’t think he sleeps around with other people except the university student but I could be wrong about that because I’m not exactly sure if that’s the case. Even if he does sleep around with other people it’s a for him to relieve stress and indulge himself. He shares his feelings with her because sometimes it’s becomes too much for him. He can’t hold it in and he has no one to talk to. He just desperately wants someone to hear his feelings and that’s exactly what she does. We need to consider the fact that Chika is a boy and he’s a bit frivolous by nature so you can understand him using this way to relieve his pent up stress and frustration. Its not the right way to do so but that’s the method he chose. Everybody has a different approach in these manner of situations so you can at the very least understand his. You might not approve of it but you can understand it none the less. All this doesn’t mean he’s not serious about Azuki. It just means that he’s too much of a coward. He doesn’t have even a little bit of courage to even try for it. He wanted Azuki to be happy without even trying his best to win her over. He knew he couldn’t win against Hiragi given how his personality resembles Azuki’s and seeing the level of interest Azuki took in him since day one. He realised him being together with her for so many years never made her react the way she does now. He has zero confidence and doesn’t like himself either. He really is just too much of a coward.
