A lot of people are mad that they ran away when he was “almost finished” taking down his mother. But you have to remember that he said the last thing he has to do is leave to take it all away from her. He didn’t want Merry to leave everything behind so he was going to disappear alone but then Merry wouldn’t let him so they “ran away” aka left together with nothing and started over. And the fact that they’re happy and with the person they love doing what they love is a pretty wholesome ending. I hope everyone is able to see that they didn’t just leave and undo all the work put into to destroying that terrible *****. The whole time he was talking about abandoning everything he built in his life to get this revenge or end her reign for Merry’s sake (the one he cares for most), so it was known that everything would be left behind.
