I think I know the reason why he has such Low confidance in his looks. Do you know what a dependa is? It's usually a military spouse. And usually the husband is ripped and good looking because he had to train in the military, but before that he was your avarage Joe. And for some reason usually their spouses are not do good looking or usually have a really bad personality. Like one person expained to me once in the comments, guys that go to serve usually didn't have such great figured and even if their physical appearance is changed, deep down they are still insecure. And some people know how to manipulate those feelings, be it with guilt or with emotions.
Now that the whole dependa rant is over, I think this is the case with out boi. He was, let's be honest, avarage in looks. But his powers and ability were pretty usless. He got used that he is usless. He got used that no one pays attention to him. After years of that kind of life, even if he is more confident when fighting, deep inside he still doesn't recognize that on the outside he changed as well (which he shows multiple times, when he gets surprized when people compliment his new looks).
