A lot of people reading this lack empathy and it shows. The author made this story NOT to justify abuse but to show that no matter how much of a trash someone is, it is never too late for anyone to still find themselves and change for the better. Not once was abused justified in this story, if anything it was acknowledged even by Kan chan himself. The author simply showed how circumstances can change someone even though they used to be brightest person, and some damages just can’t be fixed so the best solution is to get a new one.

That’s why kan chan is no longer the old kan chan from high school nor the abusive lover. He didn’t try to “fix” what was broken because he knew it couldn’t be fixed. He didn’t apologize to Yumi because he knew Yumi would forgive him and what he did was unforgivable. Instead he kept that “broken” part of himself as a reminder to become better, to seek a new self.

Everyone deserves a second chance. I’ve seen so many documentaries of ex convicts who still can’t forgive themselves for the crimes they did but they’re trying their best to live a new life as a better person. And honestly who are we to crucify Kan-chan? He doesn’t even forgive himself and is punishing himself for the rest of his life for it, what more do you want? Does his past reduce him to less than a human being that deserves happiness? Life is Yin and Yang, you can sympathize with Yumi as a victim but why do people turn a blind eye that Kan chan is also sexually and physically abused for at least 5 years at his old company?

He thought he doesn’t deserve love after he broke up with Yumi, he punished himself and shunned everyone out (that’s why everyone finds him unfriendly and intimidating). but with Shuuna he is able to feel like a human again. He’s trying his best to pick himself back up but why are people still putting him down?

Yess. My step dad experience something like this before. Although everyone said my mom is an idiot for forgiving him. But only us knows how he had changed. He apologized to me and my brother personally. For what he did and never ask for us to forgive him. He just wanted a second chance, to be part of the family. Now 6 years had past, he and my mom is happy, we are happy. I got my self a baby brother who is now 5 y/o. Me and my brother, we decide to support him when he said he wanted a second chance. We don't want him to be tip toe-ing, afraid that one mistake and that's it. Bye2. We decided that he will always be part of our family.

People are quick to judge. Not all the abuser are psychopath. Like Kan-chan, he was once a happy and loving person until he got under stressed. Not justify his action but he really deserve second chance and to be forgiven. If the victim decide to forgive him, who are we to keep on punishing him?

Heart rendering to read, love. I'm happy for you and for your family.... This is the kind of thing that only you understand and people shouldn't generalize.... Your youngest brother must be adorable!!

Beautifully put. Felt kind of awful reading some of the hypocritical comments. Some people were upset with Kan-empathizers, calling them "victim blamers." They don't realize that Kan was also a victim; it's a moral contradiction to not include Kan in the list of victims and it's saddening that they don't realize.
