hailing this manga as realistic is just plain disrespectful. not only it disrespects trans ppl but also trans rights advocates. yall are just spreading hopelessness telling us how futile their movements are when in fact, every day they fight for change -eradicating bigotry.

i always bring out topics like this to my co-workers, families and friends, and now my family not only agrees to same sex marriage but actually respects pronouns too.
pls dont lose hope, let this manga be a driving force for change. no one should struggle bc of their identity and sexuality

how though. the narrative was that it was futile for the MC's love to be reciprocated, or to have been assigned female at birth because that's all done and gone now. it didn't say that the trans movement was futile or that the MC could never transition. A lot of trans women will publicly present "as male" and remain closeted while they grow out their hair, start hrt etc.

even then, a lot of us will not achieve what you have. My background is conservative chinese people and they most certainly have not progressed despite all of my efforts because they frankly don't want to. i get the idea of saying that we shouldn't "give up" hope, and we certainly shouldn't overall. but there are some battles with people who we will lose because they choose to be ignorant.

this was meant to call out ppl who believe this manga to be realistic. the woman who runs the bar was an example. she goes on preaching transwoman can never become a woman bc she believes that was reality when they are already woman to begin with. their identity and expression are the same as some women, the only difference is their body.

the woman who runs the bar was clearly discouraging the young trans and that was kinda toxic. also there are also some people i know who actually gave up on encouraging their trans friends from transitioning out of fear of what they believe to be "realistic".

my point is what we believe to be realistic can discourage many trans people. we need to stop believing that every depressing incident that a trans can experience is realistic.

the purpose of her words though at least in my reading was her taking the idea of "you're never going to be a "real woman" in the eyes of society" and flipping it instead.

not like i am a trans woman, but the trans women i have been romantically involved with do see themselves as real women in terms of their gender, but still deal with the difficult feeling of "i can never be the kind of woman i wish i could have been" where they may (and not all trans women feel this way) wish that they had been born with the parts which would have allowed them to be assigned female at birth instead. and while this does not tie to gender as it is a social construct and a performance, certain aspects of the body have been gendered - like breast tissue, despite how cis men can also have a fair amount of it - to the degree that women who undergo a double mastectomy often feel like "less woman" for it.

at least how i read what she said is more like "we can't be exactly as a cis woman is, that isn't going to happen - but its fine to not live up to the ideals of what a woman should be in the eyes of society - because it's not just us who physically cannot attain their dreams"

Right now people are becoming more open and understanding about the LGBTQ+ community but please bear in mind that this was written in 2000 and the writer is in Asia where being different is a “sin” so during that time it is a very realistic portrayal for the situation they were in. Even now most old Asians still thinks being different is unacceptable.
