don't get too attached on the character and the storyline is what i suggest. realism in manga ranges from close to far from reality. it's not bad to compare it in RL but to convert manga into rl is kind of... yeah, will only result to heartaches.

It's basically how normal people sees it when they're not familiar around manga/anime, especially around yaoi/yuri. Apparently those people didn't spend enough time on researching stuff like that and try to know the differences. When you look at yaoi, yuri, or hentai, do any of that genre have any romance in them at all? Which of the 3 genre actually tugs you at the heart most? That's what you've got to ask yourself. I would tell that person pick a few hentai, yuri, or yaoi stuff and find which genre hits with them most.
Not really, it not that I try to hide it or anything. When I first learned about it was my friend who gave me one of their books and that the start of it.
