I m so sad that Ai no kusabi 2012 remained unfinished due to not enough budget but seriously 90s version is also good I just always watch it no yaoi love can compete to legendary yaoi as Ai ni Kusabi .

It's not unusual to change the character design for the adaptation. To be honest I much prefer the anime version over the original. They give off an entirely different vibe and the anime seems to be more fitting to the characters imo
