In simplest words, it’s because of the white calamity. After the human face disease spread, a lot of things happened which eventually led to the second banishment of Xie Lian, the white calamity wanted Xie Lian to join him ( btw. White calamity caused human face disease ) but Xie Lian ended up not doing so which led to the cure of the human face disease being to stab Xie Lian in fatal areas ( white calamity made that the only cure out of spite for white not choosing to join him and become his disciple ). So people ended up stabbing Xie Lian, which this part was called the 100 swords?? That was when people were stabbing Xie Lian in attempts to cure themselves, which worked, but since Xie Lian was immortal at the time, he couldn’t die. It’s mentioned in the novel that the young boys human faces are already pretty much gone, he carved out the faces with a knife. < That’s about it, sorry my explanation is all over the place because I’m still a bit confused over the novel, but if you have questions, just go over to the heaven officials blessing fandom> (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

Hum no... the boy’s name is Lang Ying, he’s the nephew of the king of Yong’an (you’ll learn about it in the novel) and it’s a bit complicated but his uncle was infected with the disease because of Xie Lian who wanted revenge (Yong’an basically destroyed the kingdom of Xianle) and so Lang Ying got infected with the human face disease from his uncle’s butchered corpse.
