I think he is insecure because Maya tells half truths to him. Plus there is someone actively pursuing Maya. Maya looks are very attractive, and a lot of ppl in the manga overlook Nemu, so he feels self conscious naturally. Maya also disregards Nemu’s feelings a lot, and doesn’t do a lot to reassure Nemu, he gets mad when Nemu wants clarification & asks questions. Instead of talking things out.
