ADOREDDD this story in so many ways, but I am still confused by exactly what the ending pact was? Jonathan just said “be the only one to say my name for all eternity”, is this a pact that keeps him alive or at the top forever? Is this the same curse that Jonathan was talking about that Wald left on him? So if he said Makotos name before the pact would the cycle not have continued? Not sure of the significance in that sense would love someone to help explain

it’s a curse, he will be the one who will remember him forever until he finds someone who can surpass him and join J in death.

Oh, so like a curse that he can’t forget him nor the obsession with him no matter how long he lives? Damn makes so much sense when you put it that way. I wonder though, would M even have been able to continue living once J destroyed himself anyway? Even without that pact, I doubt M would’ve been able to just casually move on being the most powerful demon and forget J. That type of all consuming obsession can’t be filled, so I think the curse probably just cemented a future that would’ve happened anyway.

Well, the curse is the effect of the ending pact. The ending pact is actually the promise they made to each other. The promise from J is to be the only demon who belongs solely to M, and the promise from M is to be the one who will say J’s name forever. It’s what M thought he wanted, but he didn’t realize that J would shatter himself to fulfill that obsession. By no longer having J physically by his side, M becomes the only one left to obsess over and pine for him. J will exist only as someone remembered and loved by M.

At the same time, this pact also serves as a pretense for J to free himself from the loneliness, obsession and heartache caused by his mentor, Wald. In doing so, J passes the same curse onto M, the loneliness, obsession and heartache. This is the vicious cycle created by the ending pact. From Wald and J's perspective, it’s almost like thinking, “What’s the point of living if the only person I love, and the only one who can no longer say my name, is gone?”

The cycle then repeats. M will eventually find a mentee who becomes obsessed with him, use them under the pretense of studying, and form the same kind of pact, just as Wald and J did, so that he can also be freed from loneliness and heartache.

Well first, M didn't even know J was gonna force himself to say M's name, so that he can shatter and break free. That's why M became hysterical. He achieved what he wanted, but not the way he expected. So, yes, now that J is gone, he can't live on without him. That's why he will find a mentee to break this curse.
I think he definitely realized right then and there, filled with regret, that it would have been better to not form the pact so that he could keep J physically by his side. It's better than having him gone forever.

Second, the point of the pact wasn't so M could move on. The point of the pact, as I've explained earlier, was for J to be M's forever obsession and engraved in him as he wished. So, it was actually to further indulge in his obsession over J. He had never intended to let J go.

Third, the pact, not the curse, actually made M's life, love, hatred, and obsession way much worse, so unbearably lonely, which is the curse of the pact. So you're like half right here. But also, like I explained, it had to be done as for J's ulterior motive: to free himself from Wald's curse.
