It took me a while to finish this work, it was kinda boring at the beginning but after getting to know the characters I've enjoyed it a lot.
If you're looking for yoir typical romance story or romcom, this is not it. I'll say it's more in the angst, slice of life and light romance with psychological elements. There's some trigger warning like: child abuse, suicidal thoughts, bullying, sexual harassment etc. It's not a light work.
The characters are complex and very interesting. Yeonwoo is constantly belittle and compare to women (cause not being "masculine" enough, his features, his complex, etc). Probs the story could've acknowledge how bad the standards and toxic masculinity could affect a guy in highschool. I'm almost sure that the bully from middle school felt attracted to Yeonwoo (I'm not justifying his crimes tho, but it gave me a lot of internalized homophobia). Yeonwoo is very sensitive, crybaby, naive, and very sheltered. His relationship with Junhyeok could honestly go beyond the friendship, we can see why it felt like there could be more than a friendship, I could even see him ending up like Harang, with an unrequited love but I like what they did with him and Nari.
Junhyeok and Yeonwoo end up acknowledge how codependendant their relationship is, it's unhealthy, overprotective, obsessive, and heartbreaking but they are able to move from that. Their past, the way Yeonwoo was sheltered, the guilt, everything had so much weight to explain how both ended up being.
Yeonwoo and Haesol are meant to be imo. Both break a bit the gender roles and the way they act, could've been a straight couple or gay or lesbian and it'll still suit them. Even if the roles were resversed. Heasol and her family relationship made it hard for her to understand love or her feelings for Yeonwoo. She didn't want to be left behind once again, Yeonwoo became her light, her escape and his words hit more than we might give him credit for.
Honestly both the middle school bully and haesol parents, specially the dad should be in jail. We understand why Haseol's mom ended up like that but we don't justify her behavior. It's no wonder she'll have to threaten to expose them so they could finally let them live.
Nari also ws harrased, bullyied, belittled, even the fucking teacher victim blame her. Yet she was stronger than I thought. It's a shame we didn't dive much into Harang, our doom lesbian, but at least they didn't make her annoying. Haesoo suffered a lot, and the way he's triggered and dealt with the trauma, he couldn't cope with it much like haesol mind erasing all those bad memories, they literally almost died. The dad prob rape her new wife too. That woman needs to get out of that marriage assap. Even she couldn't stay still seeing him beating up his son.
The author took it's time to get to the most important part to explain why everyone is this way but it did a great job. I don't think it's a story for everyone but I did enjoyed it quite a lot. And how sweeet they became. Wished we could've gotten more of Junhyeok and Nari.
