Is this site illegal???

    LessThanThree May 8, 2017 1:19 pm

    Yes.

    Tsukishima Kei May 8, 2017 1:26 pm

    yeah

    Anonymous May 8, 2017 1:34 pm

Lol this place isn't some sort of library. These are all pirated books dude, it's not like our taxes support this. We're just reading it all for free so it's illegal.

    Aoi07 May 8, 2017 1:35 pm

    Most sites are illegal tbh

    DaisiesAndLilies May 8, 2017 1:37 pm

Technically, yes. The manga industry of Japan has decided to allow scanlation, and that's why it continues. Japanese publishers will, however, try to shut down scanlation projects that translate and distribute their publications when they are selling that publication in that language. That's why scanlation groups that are reputable and ethical will drop a project and cease distribution when a title becomes licensed and published in English.

Korean Comics are different. Web toons are sold in English. Scanlators translate the Korean versions so that people can get the English versions faster than they would from the publisher. However, because these titles are being sold in English, the scanlation projects are taking money away from the publishers and the artists. The industry of web toons that is published in English doesn't view scanlation as a positive thing in the same way that most of Japan's manga industry (that hasn't been published in English) does.

It's a complicated situation. But for people who don't want Mangago and other similar sites to be legally taken down, they should not share and read comics that are licensed in English, and they should not read and share comics when the artists have expressed that they don't want their work shared here.

No, you are not rude at all. It makes no sense to me that publishers would put out poorly translated and edited work. I have also bought ebooks with horrible resolution, and if made me really mad. That's something publishers need to consider. And if the scanlated version is better, so be it. However, if we want this site to continue, we have to support artists when and where we can and try our best to minimize situations where scanlation hurts rather than helps artists.

Yes this site is illegel https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-tell-if-a-manga-site-is-illegal-or-legal maybe it will help you

    LessThanThree May 8, 2017 3:07 pm

There are a couple of manhwa that the authors have consented to have their work shown here. So those ones aren't illegal.

But the thing about mangago is it runs similar to sites like facebook. They are upload based which means members are uploading content rather than admin. Just cuz you post illegal manga pictures on Facebook doesnt make facebook illegal you dig? However, if they do not comply to specific take down requests, they could potentially shut down for being negligent with illegal activity

I don't really understand what is meant by the term "illegal site". On the surface, it seems obvious, but Facebook is not considered an illegal site, but they do a lot of illegal things. And illegal things happen on their site, and they do not prevent them. That's the same thing as Mangago. Now, the difference between Facebook and Mangago is that the basic premise of Facebook is technically legal (sharing comments and photos of oneself with friends and family), whereas Mangago's is technically not legal. Is that what "illegal site" means?

It can be defined as an illegal site if the intentions of the site are legal activities. Facebook has some illegal stuff on it, but the purpose of the website was not to do illegal things. The purpose of Mangago is pirating manga to read online. The only things on this website that AREN'T illegal are a few manhwa whose authors gave permission to post it on websites like Mangago. I honestly know only of one such manhwa, and I can't even remember the name. Some yaoi, I think.

Look I really don't know what to say except that mangago is legal. It's a legal legitimate website. A large portion of the content is semi-illegal. (Technically illegal to scan and translate but no one really cares because Japan has decided it's too much effort to shut these types of things down unless the author is contracted by an American publishing company) a relatively small portion of it is 100% illegal (as in should not be translated because it's licensed and being published in America currently) and a very VERY small portion of them are 100% legal (as in the trans/scan group were given permission by the author to translate and post) however, none of this has anything to do with mangago. The only illegal aspect of the website is when 100% illegal is uploaded onto the website (technically, it's not supposed to be there because it's licensed) however, most of it is legal, and it works just like facebook. Even the illegal aspect I mentioned earlier will pan out to nothing because no one has time to track down all all the tumblr posts and such and so the only thing that could potentially happen is that mangago Would be asked to take their 100% illegal mangas down. This happens very rarely, but it does happen. I can't explain it to you and better so if you still don't believe me (though I promise I'm a trustworthy source) there's nothing i can do to argue it better and I wish you all a wonderful day XD

I agree with you that there is an unspoken agreement between sites like Mangago and the Japanese language industry. It's definitely there. However, if the Japanese manga industry changed their minds and took Scanlation sites to court, the sites would lose, plain and simple, because distributing copyrighted work without express consent from the publisher is against world law. And sites that fail to remove copyrighted content on a regular basis are subject to that law. That's just the way it is. Scanlation sites have been brought down before. The publishers that brought them down went out of business, but they were able to do that just the same.

Msg mangaka(?) when will u update on mangago. something like that. and the managaka says that we have to pay to read and so everyone's worried that all manhwas will be dropped and stopped translating like wbw and lb. it's in the past tho :(

    Momoた May 8, 2017 6:15 am

She was so damn dumb to tweet to a real author (Zec) "when is the next chapter come on Mangago" so, obviusly the autor now knows about the existnce of this site and people are worried about managago closing for copyright infringe and also for troubling the translator!

she already "apologised" but oh god, what an incredible idiot lmao

Mangago isn't getting shut down people are just paranoid. Lezhin has known of the existence of mangago for a while now. If it were that easy to take legal action against mangago it would have already happened.
