In the novel if I remember it correctly. The esper who pair with him isolates him during his stay at Betel Guild. Like lit oppressed him theres one esper in the guild who pitied him and help him escape? Thats the tragedy happen while fighting that esper died and the brother who is the captain blamed him but the friend esper protected him. That friend esper died and also with the betel guild. Thats where his guilt coming from, thats why he hates obsession and he vanished after. Im sorry since its been long since I read the novel
